Growing up in a Christian home I knew every Sunday we had to attend Church, we had to say our prayers before we went to sleep and had to give grace before we ate , but I never knew what that meant , I never cared to ask cause I thought well that’s life. Little did I know not every family went to Church every Sunday or prayed before they went to bed or maybe even said grace
As I grew up, I started realising that there’s much more than just “going to Church” saying our Prayers and reading the Bible. It was beyond the fact that we asked God for our daily provisions it was about having an ongoing relationship with God that kept us closer to him.
Now having the knowledge of this all doesn’t mean I always kept my relationship in-check. I went from not reading the Word but saying my prayers to not saying my prayers for some days or at times create the distance from God cause I wanted to do somethings that I knew he wouldn’t be happy with (I think we call it sin). Maybe when I would get to my right mind, I would be too afraid to go back to God and ask him for forgiveness because Why would he forgive me when I sinned knowingly? Well when I gained the courage he always took me back (Yes, this cycle happened multiple times).
“If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” 1 John 1:9” NIV
To be able to be forgiven every time, just showed me how much God loves me and how he was yearning to have a real relationship with me.
By his Grace I’m now in a stable relationship with him and things are going well.
Being Intentional With God
This really has been my key so far.
Well firstly you must be really up for God, just like any other relationship you’re not going to enter it without trying to be intentional, and God is not up to being your side piece. You must know it’s not going to be all rosy, but that at time it’s going to be tough. You really must be up for it.
By Being Intentional with God lies
- Reading The Word
- Fasting and Prayer
- Loving Him
- Obeying His Commandments
Reading The Word /Meditating Upon The Word
As easy as it sounds but boy can it be hard at first, reading the Word isn’t just opening the Bible reading a few verses and that’s it for the day.
It’s full meditating on his Word, reading a verse or passage and thinking about what it has spoken you.
I once found The Word as “intimidating” because I found it too challenging to carry out what God wanted me to do. As I really began meditating upon the Word I found it as a love letter from God, because in his Word he’s always trying to keep us encouraged and keep us in the right path. As you keep on meditating upon The Word you keep on finding abut his love for you and all you want to do is know more about this wonderful God.
The Word keeps us in check, it keeps us guarded, it keeps us ready for anything that may try to come our way. The Word is the Sword of our Spirit
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. ” Ephesians 6:10-17
Obeying His Word
It’s what you do after reading his Word that really matter is obeying His Word and taking action to it.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24 NIV
You know that time when someone hurts you (it can be in any way ) and you want to do in that moment Is revenge or post that anger at them then you remember God says I should not revenge.
“Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:17-21
It takes all will and power not to do evil , because you know what is right and you decide to at towards it. God appreciates those little things because he knows who you’re doing it for , that’s him . We Obey his Word because we don’t want to disappoint him.
Fasting and Prayer
Prayer is a way of talking to God , to keep in touch with him and reach his Glory. With this I didn’t understand why others would go on for about 30 mins or more and I would last about a minute or 2 at most , now I’m not saying all prayers need to be long they can be very short but I thought to myself that was the best I could. At some point I thought you had to make a list of what you wanted so it could be long but little did I know the Holy Spirit could help you intercede, God could help you talk to him
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
All you must do is ask God to help you speak to him and it’s just at that.
The Holy Spirit knows what lies in our hearts and he finds a way to let it all out.
Prayer is not exercised when we desire something from God , but we pray everyday when we wake, when we are heading to school/work , when we are happy , when we are sad or when we about to sleep . At times as I’m having a walk I talk to God as if we’re having a conversation.
“ And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6 :18”
Growing up in a Christian home you know at the beginning of the year you fast for the year ahead of you. I thought fasting and praying was done when you really needed something from God , now this is partially true but i didn’t really know what it really meant .
I didn’t know fasting was fully feeling God’s presence in your life , I didn’t know it was tapping into his Glory and when I became aware of that I didn’t think of it as I was depriving my body it became a routine in my life that didn’t stop .
Jesus fasted to prepare for his ministry (Matthew 4: 1- 17), Paul and Barnabas fasted to seek God’s wisdom (Acts 14:23), Ezra fasted to seek deliverance and protection (Ezra 8: 21-23) and the list goes on.
Loving God is not telling yourself you love him it’s feeling the love, its knowing you Love God with a your might. One of the greatest commandments sayed we should Love God with all our heart mind and soul.
“ “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[bAll the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
” Matthew 22 : 36-40
Some may find it hard to really love God because of the unfortunate things that happen in their life and blame him for it. I don’t blame them for thinking so cause he is God – controller of all things, but he turns those unfortunate things for the good and for his glory.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
“We can thank God for His great plan.
· If Joseph’s family wasn’t messed up and weird, his brothers would never have sold him as a slave.
· If Joseph’s brothers never sold him as a slave, then Joseph would never have gone to Egypt.
· If Joseph never went to Egypt, he would never have been sold to Potiphar.
· If Joseph was never sold to Potiphar, Potiphar’s wife would never have falsely accused him of rape.
· If Potiphar’s wife never falsely accused Joseph of rape, then Joseph would never have been put in prison.
· If Joseph was never put in prison, he would have never met the baker and butler of Pharaoh.
· If Joseph never met the baker and butler of Pharaoh, he would have never interpreted their dreams.
· If Joseph never interpreted their dreams, he would have never interpreted Pharaoh’s dream.
·If Joseph never interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, he never would have become prime minister, second in Egypt only to Pharaoh.
· If Joseph never became prime minister, he never would have wisely prepared for the terrible famine to come.
· If Joseph never wisely prepared for the terrible famine, then his family back in Canaan would have died in the famine.
· If Joseph’s family back in Canaan died in the famine, then the Messiah could not have come from a dead family.
· If the Messiah did not come forth, then Jesus never came.
· If Jesus never came, then we are all dead in our sins and without hope in this world.
· We are grateful for God’s great and wise plan.
” – Enduring Word
God sacrificed his One and Only Son so we could be cleansed of our sins, so we could have a real relationship with him and be with him in the everlasting life. He demonstrated his love for us, now that’s real love there I don’t know what kind of definition you’ve been fed but this is it.
“For God so loved the World that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16 NIV
All we have to do is ask him to help us love him because God is Love. God is our blueprint of love. Take for the instance those around you that love you take them as diamonds reflect.
Diamonds don’t shine but they reflect light. The people around you are the diamonds that God (The Light) uses to reflect his love from, because God is love.
So, when we consume that love around us let’s know that that’s God
Let’s secure that relationship with God because all God wants Is that everlasting relationship with him. Let’s be Intentional with him and make that relationship work because it’s the Most Important Relationship Ever.
